What is Pelvic Health?
Pelvic health concerns are common and often overlooked, but they are not normal—and effective treatment is available. Pelvic physiotherapy focuses on the muscles and organs of the pelvis — including the bladder, bowel, and reproductive system.
Pelvic health therapy can help with:
Leaking urine or stool
Pelvic pain, pressure or constipation
Pain with sex or movement
Pregnancy and postpartum recovery
A pelvic health physiotherapist uses gentle, evidence-based techniques like movement, breathwork, muscle retraining, education, and hands-on therapy to reduce symptoms and restore function.
How is Pelvic Health Assessed?
Pelvic health physiotherapy begins with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, health history, and goals. Assessment can be done externally or internally, depending on your comfort and needs.
External assessment may include observing posture, breathing patterns, core and hip strength, pelvic alignment, and movement. Your physiotherapist may also gently feel the muscles and tissues around your pelvis, hips, and abdomen to check for tension, weakness, or pain.
Internal assessment (through the vagina or rectum) allows your physiotherapist to directly assess the pelvic floor muscles—checking their strength, coordination, tone, and ability to relax. This can provide important insight into the cause of symptoms like bladder or bowel leakage, pelvic pain, or prolapse.
Internal assessment is always explained in detail, done only with your consent, and you can stop or switch to external assessment at any time. Your comfort is always the number one priority.
